Nick Heidfeld’s distinctive blue and yellow helmet has been seen on Grand Prix circuits since the 2000 season. Unlike most Formula 1 stars, Heidfeld did not rely on the talents of a graphic artist to personalise his helmet. Nick designed it himself in his early years in motor sport, starting with a blank sheet of paper and a few colour markers. “The colours do not have a special meaning to me,” he said. “I picked blue and yellow because I really like them and they fit well together.” The lower section of the helmet integrates a small band sporting the three colours of the German flag: black, red and yellow. “I designed my helmet when I began in Formula 3 back in 1996. Before that, I raced with a plain white helmet,” Heidfeld added. The blue and yellow helmet made the headlines news when Nick won the prestigious Monaco Formula 3 race in 1997. Through his years in Formula 1, the basic design has remained unchanged except for a few details. “I adjusted a few things and modified the coloured stripes because the logos of some sponsors needed to be placed on certain strategic locations on the helmet.” Having joined the Jordan-Ford team this season, Heidfeld’s helmet was slightly modified to better match the livery of the EJ14. Amongst the adjustments, there is a switch to a solid blue colour, a white strip at the top of the helmet for placing the “Benson & Hedges” logos, and red flames painted on top of the rear yellow section the helmet.
