Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello continued their domination of the Australian Grand Prix weekend when they set the fastest times in this morning's practice session, fully one second faster than their nearest rivals - the BMW Williams pairing of Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralt Schumacher. Practice was interrupted by a red flag during the first 45 minute period when Takuma Sato crashed heavily in his DHL Jordan Honda, and the latter stages of the second session were affected by rain.
Behind the Ferrari and Williams duos came the McLaren pair, recovering from a difficult practice session on Friday with David Coulthard and new team mate Kimi Raikkonen 5th and 6th quickest. They were followed by the fastest of the Saubers, Nick Heidfeld heading the two BAR Hondas of Jacques Villeneuve and Oliver Panis, with Giancarlo Fisichella completing the top ten his his DHL Jordan Honda. Giancarlo was quite happy with the performance of the car, his lap time reflecting the fact that he never ran a practice qualifying run at the end of the session because the track was so wet. Takuma Sato wound up 19th fastest after missing the entire second half of practice following his accident.
The overall shape of the field has settled down after Friday's initial practice showed some upsets. The Renaults of Trulli and Button are 12th and 13th, Frentzen and Bernoldi 14th and 16th in their Arrows, and the Toyotas of McNish and Salo 15th and 18th respectively. The Jaguar team appears to be struggling for performance, Eddie Irvine languishing well down the field until he managed to set the 17th fastest time, though his team mate Pedro de la Rosa remained 21st, sandwiched by the two Minardis.
