Recently Autosport visited Eddie Jordan for an in-depth discussion and F1jordan.com got a sneak preview. Don’t miss the 2002 Season Preview in this week’s edition of Autosport (out Thursday 7 February) to catch the full interview with EJ, by editor, Anthony Rowlinson.
EJ on F1 and the economy
There seemed to be more money around in the late 90s. People say that the 11 September tragedy was the turning point but I disagree with that. The stock markets have been experiencing a downturn since the beginning of 2001, though there is no doubt Sept 11th exacerbated things considerably. I don’t believe, however, that F1 will suffer too much. The great thing that has happened over the last 5 to 10 years is that Formula One has become an accepted global sport. New people desperately want to get into Formula One because they see it as a huge opportunity to grow their business.
EJ on Dave Richards
He’s been a friend of mine for years, in fact, I’ve known Dave Richards longer than any other Formula One manager. Dave and I socialise together and I’ve no doubt that he wants the best for his team. He’s an absolute survivor and Jordan is a committed survivor as well.
EJ on the team image
There is a niche in this market for a team like Jordan which is youthful, vibrant, and dynamic. We’re trying to mix two very diverse worlds. One is serious, the other is fun. They don’t normally come together but Jordan’s objective is to bring those simultaneously. It’s an extremely good fun, serious team.
EJ on his role in the team
I concentrate on the drivers, the commercial side, and building the financial structure. I try to keep out of other things and not interfere with what other people are doing, which I am hopefully doing less as I get older, so they can get on and do what they need to do, to make us successful.
EJ on motivation for the future
In the past Jordan has won some races, and we want to win again. I’m upbeat about the people who are in the company, and very excited about the younger approach to the driver line-up again, it’s like a breath of fresh air.
