Ferrari: 'best yet'

Ferrari unveiled their 2002 challenger, the F2002, in Marenello today (Wednesday).  The car is the 48th Ferrari single-seater built to contest in the Formula One World Championship and Technical Director Ross Brawn believes it is their best car ever.

Michael Schumacher is targeting the Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championships, “We want to once again win both world championships and there is nothing nicer than winning with Ferrari.  We obtained beautiful results in the past and that is what we want for the future."

If successful in securing a fifth Drivers’ title, Schumacher Snr will match the record set by Argentinian legend Juan Manuel Fangio in the 1950s.

Maranello's engineers say they have optimised the aerodynamic efficiency, lowered the centre of gravity and created the optimum conditions to maximise the performance of the 051 engine and the Bridgestone tyres.  The F2002 boasts an all-new design philosophy with the chassis, sides pods, radiators, exhausts, rear wing, cooling systems and aerodynamics, steering, front and rear suspension, engine and transmission all re-designed for the new season.

Ferrari's technical chief designer Rory Byrne explains the later-than-usual roll-out of the car: "This year was unique in that we could race our previous year’s car.  We did not need to build a car because of a change of regulations but we should only build a car if we believed it could be better. We decided to prolong the development to ensure we made an appreciable step in performance. This has resulted in a shorter period of testing before the first race.”
