There's been some press speculation about Rio Ferdinand joining Manchester United -- but what about Giancarlo Fisichella? Sure, he has experience of midfield running but the Roman as a footie star? Yet there he was last week, working out with Ryan Giggs at a training ground in Manchester. And Giggs as a racing driver? "Very funny", as Giancarlo put it, later in the day. Actually, you might be surprised, as it was job swap time for the two sporting heroes, albeit only for a day (it's OK Eddie, Giggsy will be in the car at Silverstone but only for a photo). Fisi impressed when he and Giggs did some dribbling and shooting exercises in the morning, although Giggsy was certainly a master with the ball and left Fisico behind a lot of the time. Later, when the Welsh star took to the driving seat of a Honda S2000 it was Fisi’s turn to be the expert teacher, and he had to hang on for dear life. Fisi had shown Giggs how it should be done as he skilfully drifted and slid the 240bhp Honda sports car around the Three Sisters Racetrack near Wigan. Ryan tried the same a few minutes later and did well for a rookie, but mistook 'slide' for 'spin' and ended up facing the wrong way! Thankfully we don’t have to worry about what might happen if he tried the same in Fisico’s DHL Jordan Honda EJ12... Speaking later, a smiling Giggs said "I don't think people realise how difficult it is or how skilful and dedicated those drivers are. I just got a little taste of that myself and it's tough". Fisi said "That was a lot of fun, Ryan is such an ace with the ball and he did well in the car, but I think he should stick to football and I should stay behind the wheel!" |
