No, Hans is not a new German F1 driver, it is the Head and Neck Support which will be compulsory in Formula 1 as from the start of next season. Essentially a collar designed to protect against whiplash and other head injuries in the event of a crash, most teams have tested it over the past couple of years. Now, the Sauber drivers Nick Heidfeld and Felipe Massa plan to use it for this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix. Although commonly used in the States, most F1 drivers have complained that HANS restricts movement and visibility. However, Sauber now feels it has fine-tuned the system to a point where they are ready to give it a try.
