McNish's lucky escape

A few hours after qualifying, Allan McNish was deemed fit to take part in tomorrow’s warm-up session, athough the Scotsman will be given a final once over by the medical team in the morning. To say the Scotsman had a lucky escape would be an understatement, given that the 130R where he lost control of his Toyota in qualifying is usually taken at around 190 mph, so his impact speed must have been at least 160 mph.

McNish seemed to have negotiated the curve in one piece when his car suddenly snapped into vicious oversteer, prompting the driver to over-correct, before it slammed into the barriers, at a point where there was a join in the metal and where there was no tyre wall. The car actually broke the barrier, passing over it and landing on the other side.

Thankfully, McNish emerged shaken but with nothing worse than a few bruises, especially to his right knee. The fact he survived unscathed is a great tribute to all the work carried out by FIA and the teams themselves to constantly improve safety in F1. Stranger than fiction, shortly before the session Allan told a BBC Radio 5 reporter that he loved oversteer, "especially when the car steps out of line at 180!" he joked. Well he certainly got his wish!
