Always the team to try something new, Jordan broke virgin ground yesterday in the motorhome in Imola. With the British Press assembled for the fortnightly Jordan Grand Prix Breakfast which they enjoy each Friday of every race weekend, the buzz from the hospitality area was literally audible as a tuneful variety of beeps, rings, vibrates and jingles signalled Jordan's 'text session with Virgin Mobile' - the first ever release of team information to the media via SMS.
"We were all sitting enjoying the best fry up the F1 Paddock offers," explained one journalist, "when suddenly all our phones started beeping with SMS messages. When we looked at our phones the screen said that the message was from 'EJ'. Scrolling down, the message read, "Good morning! Sir Richard Branson is proud to announce Virgin Mobile's sponsorship of the Jordan Grand Prix team this season! Details of the deal are coming up.' It was great - certainly a good way to grab the journalists' attention."
Some members of the British press corp had not arrived at the circuit when the text message came through. F1 Racing's Editor in Chief, Matt Bishop, was en route to the circuit with his colleagues. "Suddenly our phones went off in unison, which seemed rather odd, and when we discovered why, we thought it was rather cool! We ended up talking about Jordan and Virgin all the way to the track. In fact F1 Racing had suggested to Jordan's PR team some time ago that it would make a superb feature to get Eddie Jordan and Sir Richard Branson together - so perhaps we should claim some credit for this new deal! Either way, we want to be first in line for that exclusive interview!"
