Foster explains Suzuka set-up strategy

Having concentrated on finding a good race set up during Friday's practice, the Benson and Hedges Jordan engineers and drivers are now in briefing, prior to this morning's final free practice session and the main item on the agenda will be working out how to adapt the EJ11s for qualifying.

Suzuka is a relatively high downforce track, the cars needing enough aero grip to cope with the many and varied corners. Set up here is a major compromise and the usual approach is to get the car as near perfect as possible for the slower sections. "Most of your time on a lap comes from the slower parts of the track," explains Managing Director Trevor Foster.

"You won't really gain or lose much time on the faster parts. The ideal car here is one set-up to change direction very quickly, to deal with corners like the "S" section behind the pits. So you really want to dial out any potential for understeer, so that the car is as responsive as possible. You also need good traction to power out of the final first gear chicane."
