Yesterday’s Italian Grand Prix broke the existing record for the fastest race ever, all over in just under one hour and fifteen minutes at an average speed for the winner of 247.585 km/h. It beats the previous record, also established at Monza, over 30 years ago, when Peter Gethin won at an average of 242.615 km/h. It has to be said that Gethin’s victory in a BRM, came at the end of a more exciting race than yesterday’s as the Englishman’s winning margin was just a hundredth of a second, while the top five across the line were covered by just over half a second.
