The McLaren-Mercedes team confirmed today that Juan Pablo Montoya will be joining the team in 2005. Earlier this year, it had looked as though the Colombian would be making the switch from BMW-Williams in time for the 2004 season, but given that his contract had another year to run and McLaren had already confirmed its driver line-up for next year, it seems that both parties have decided to avoid any contractual squabbles. Montoya’s only previous connection to McLaren-Mercedes dates back to 1996 when he drove a Mercedes in a round of the ITC championship at Silverstone. Today’s announcement means that current McLaren driver, David Coulthard, can already start looking for a new berth for 2005.
