New boss for GPWC

The GPWC (Grand Prix World Championship) has announced it has appointed a new chairman. The organisation unites the car manufacturers involved in Formula 1, with the stated aim of running an alternative championship once the current Concorde Agreement expires at the end of 2007. GPWC has been leaderless for about two weeks, since the Paolo Cantarella, the previous chairman, lost his job as CEO of Fiat.

It’s no great surprise that he has been replaced at the GPWC  by Jurgen Hubbert, who was Vice Chairman, as well as holding down a day job as a Board Member of DaimlerChrysler.

Cantarella’s departure meant that Ferrari (through Fiat) was no longer represented on the GPWC and his position has been filled by the appointment of Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo as a GPWC director. The organisation is due to meet with the Formula 1 team principals in early July; the first time such a meeting has been held since November last year.
