Michael Schumacher stormed around the Imola track to claim pole position for tomorrow's San Marino Grand Prix, his brother Ralf only 0.014s adrift to take second spot and make it a Schumacher family front row. Rubens Barrichello was third in spite of crashing his race car during warm-up just prior to qualifying starting, while Juan Pablo Montoya was a strong fourth ahead of a very impressive Mark Webber in the Jaguar.
Qualifying was frustrating for Jordan Ford, Giancarlo Fisichella 17th and Ralph Firman in 19th position. Firman was the first of the Jordan drivers onto the track but he suffered a seriously locked front wheel under braking for the Tamburello chicane and then went off onto the grass for several metres at the exit losing valuable time. He recovered well, but his time had already suffered.
"I made a mistake at the first corner and locked up, badly flat spotting the front wheel," said Ralph. "Disappointing but I just hope the race tomorrow goes better."
Team mate Fisichella drove a smooth lap but was two tenths off Jarno Trulli's Renault and disappointed to be so far back, particularly given his hopes for this weekend after his victory in Interlagos last week.
The only major incident in qualifying came at the beginning when Jos Verstappen, the second driver out, crashed his Minardi very heavily at the Variante Alta chicane causing the session to be stopped for a few minutes.
