Difficult qualifying for Jordan

The DHL Jordan Honda team was generally disappointed by today's qualifying performance, and tonight will be spent trying to ensure that the race set-up enables Takuma Sato and Giancarlo Fisichella to race aggressively from their lower than expecting starting positions.

Giancarlo Fisichella was particularly disappointed, for having qualified 6th in Canada two weeks ago he was hopeful of at least being able to threaten a top 10 position for tomorrow's race.  Uncertain of the precise nature of the problem, he will be working closely with race engineer Rob Smedley and Director of Race and Test Engineering Gary Anderson to find out why the car underperformed in qualifying, and what can be done to improve his chances for the race.

Takuma Sato can be very satisfied with his personal performance this weekend, and for most of qualifying hovered around 12th position before being pipped at the end and dropped to 14th.  He at least enjoys the revised Nurburgring, which Fisichella admits he doesn't.

The objective of the DHL Jordan Honda team this weekend was to score further Championship points to narrow the gap to Sauber and Renault in the Constructors Championship, but with both these teams qualifying in front of the yellow EJ13s, that prospect has dimmed.  Two important variables which could help - or hinder - Jordan's chances in the race are the weather and the revised circuit.  Incidents are anticipated at the first corner, which has a wide entry and is quite bumpy, while a 30% chance of rain was being reported up until yesterday.  That forecast has rather changed with he Nurburgring basking in sunshine, but one can never predict the weather very accurately here because - rather like its close neighbour Spa-Francorchamps - the microclimate in the mountains can change things very suddenly.
