Having tackled the Historic Monaco Grand Prix last weekend, Takuma Sato was back in the Principality today, called up to meet the media in this afternoon’s FIA press conference as part of the build up to this Sunday’s Grand Prix.
Naturally, the subject of his Austria collision with Nick Heidfeld was top of the agenda. "Apart from a slightly sore knee I am fine," said the DHL Jordan Honda driver. "It was certainly the biggest impact I have ever felt. But thanks to the technical regulations, these cars are very strong. I have to say the medical and rescue teams in Austria also did a very good job." Having driven a Lotus 49B dating back to the late Sixties last weekend, Taku was well placed to see just how much safety has improved in the sport. "In the Lotus, I was basically sitting in the middle of a fuel tank," he explained. "It certainly was very dangerous compared to today’s cars."
Sato was unable to compete in the actual Historic race last Sunday, as parts needed to repair damage to the Lotus were not available. However, the F1 rookie felt the two practice sessions had given him a valuable insight into the demands of the famous Monaco track. "It was a great experience," he said. "I haven’t driven on a street circuit since Macau last year and now I am looking forward to racing here in a modern F1 car. I hope it goes well for us. Giancarlo drove a fantastic race in Austria and so the team’s motivation is up at the moment. I am enjoying having Giancarlo as a team-mate. I am learning a lot from him and he is a good "target" for me."
