Sally Wager, who works in Jordan's Purchasing Office, has been selected for the Great Britain Women's Squad for the 2002 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships in Kitakyushu (Japan) this August.
Sally plays and trains regularly with her local team in Daventry, which won its "Central" division in the national league, and made it to the final at the national play-offs. The team lost out in the final, but the GB coach happened to be at the play-offs and he spotted Sally's talent, inviting her to train with the national squad. After only her second session with Great Britain, she was selected for the team of 12 which will play against eight other countries for the 2002 Championship. Including both women's and men's competitions, the tournament will have 240 participants and 80 staff members.
Sally has never visited Japan before and does not enjoy flying much, but she is prepared to bite the bullet for this opportunity. "It's so great to have the chance to play in this competition and also compete for the first time at an international level, that I'll just have to get over the flying bit!" She continued, "It's thanks to my coach Gordon Perry, who transformed our local team, that I have had the motivation to get this far. I can't wait to get to Kitakyushu and I hope we can win."
