Britain's Jensen Button was stretchered away to an ambulance following a high speed accident in his BAR Honda during this morning's second practice session, but is apparently in good condition. His car snapped sideways and hit the wall under braking for the chicane which follows the famous Monte Carlo tunnel, then bounced across the track and hit the wall on the other side of the circuit before spearing across the entry to the chicane and smashing into the retaining wall.
In a mirror-image of the accident which effectively ended Karl Wendlinger's career in 1994, the BAR hit the wall side-on, spinning acround as it did so. Button remained in the car after the accident, his head moving but apparently unable to extricate himself from the damaged BAR.
Attended by the FIA medical teams, the driver was eventually removed and stretchered to a waiting ambulance to be taken to the circuit's medical centre. The news from Professor Syd Watkins, Formula One's top medical advisor, is that Button is in good overall condition and is now having checks. His car was heavily damaged in the accident which delayed second practice by some 20 minutes.
