Eghbal Hamidy joined Jordan Grand Prix as the team's Technical Director, ready for the start of the 2001 Formula One season. Commenting on his new role, Eghbal said 'The role of a Technical Director is very much established in F1 and it encompasses various areas and engineering disciplines. I will be looking to focus my efforts on pulling together and developing a cohesive car design package with the skilled team of people that Jordan has in this area, rather than on operational issues.'
Born in Iran, Eghbal's academic curiosity was sparked at a young age by the Apollo programme. As a high-flying student of Imperial College London, his early B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees were in Aeronautical Engineering. A slight change of direction to consider Road Vehicle Aerodynamics at Ph.D. level, for which he was sponsored by Honda, later took his wind tunnel experience and knowledge to Williams Grand Prix in 1988 as Senior Aerodynamicist, where he remained for eight years.
Eghbal now joins Jordan with over a decade of experience in F1, having also previously worked for the Stewart-Ford team from mid 1996 as Head of Aerodynamics, before joining Arrows as Chief Designer in 1999.
Always a pragmatist, Hamidy is acclaimed for his technical and design expertise and imagination, although within his quiet and modest manner there is never the presence of egotism, which can typically be displayed in F1.
On joining the team, Hamidy commented, 'I'm excited to be joining Jordan as I think there are some exciting times ahead of us. The team and Honda have done a very good job and I'm looking forward to contributing to that effort and guiding the evolution of the new car package to achieve the goal that the team have set themselves.'
