Farewell Rob Walker

The last of grand prix racing's true private entrants, Rob Walker, died of pneumonia at the age of 84 on 29th April. Part of the family which gave its name to Johnny Walker whisky, Rob was a handy gentleman racer in his youth, before switching to running cars for other driver after serving as a Royal Navy pilot in the Second World War. Some of the best grand prix stars of their day got behind the wheel of Rob Walker cars, often humbling the bigger teams: Reg Parnell, Peter Collins, Stirling Moss, Maurice Trintignant, Jochen Rindt, Mike Hailwood and Graham Hill were all on the Walker roll of honour. After retiring from the sport in 1974, Walker's wit and habit of speaking as he found made him a natural for commenting on the sport and he worked for the American magazine "Road and Track," attending races right up to the Nineties, accompanied by his wife Bette.
