A Bookmaker's View Of The Austrian Grand Prix
Place your bets for the race at the A1 Ring on May 13th.

Jarno Trulli continued his excellent start to the 2001 season with a third consecutive points finish; his fourth place also ensuring Jordan’s record of scoring points in every Grand Prix remained intact. The next step is for the Jordan duo to claim a spot on the podium, something odds of 7/2 suggest isn’t too far away.

For the third successive race, the Italian driver outscored Heinz-Harald Frentzen and he now leads his more experienced team-mate by one point in the drivers’ standings. However the German does have a better recent record at the A1 Ring than Trulli, gaining fourth place on the grid here two years ago and taking the chequered flag in the same spot.

With Trulli at 33/1 and Frentzen a 50/1 shot, both Jordan drivers appeal as each way betting propositions, and unsurprisingly the pair head the “Wacky Races” market as favourites to head a nominated group of drivers.

After suffering a Spanish nightmare, McLaren will be hoping for a change of fortune in Austria. Mika Hakkinen was particularly unlucky not to record win number four at Catalunya, his tactical brilliance in evidence throughout the race, but with team-mate David Coulthard only scoring two points, the Finn will still feel he has a chance of being competitive in the race for the Championship. He has a great record in Austria, winning two of the last three races there, and has held pole for the last two years, a repeat of which is on offer at 11/4.

David Coulthard has been something of a 'bridesmaid' at the A1 Ring in recent years, with three successive second places. This is not that surprising when you consider the Scot was probably having to give way to Hakkinen in the team pecking order, but as that is not the case this year, odds of 11/4 for both drivers suggest both will be attempting to win the race on merit.

The man to prosper when Hakkinen suffered his last lap disaster was reigning champion Michael Schumacher, and as always the German’s victory spelt bad news for the bookmakers. On offer at 13/8 after two consecutive defeats, his popularity with punters and the fact he gained pole position meant he started the race the 11/10 favourite. He also regained his lead in the Drivers Championship and heads to Austria as the hot favourite once more.

The younger Schumacher was well backed at 13/2 to score win number two, but his exit on lap 20 meant his supporters knew their fate early on and he is available at 10/1 to triumph in Austria. The Williams team did have reason to celebrate however as Colombian newcomer Juan Pablo Montoya scored his first points in F1. Despite several encouraging signs earlier in the season, few punters sided with Montoya and his second place was well received by the layers.

Punters may not have had faith in Montoya, but some shrewd backers certainly anticipated an improvement from Jacques Villeneuve. Available at 100/1 before the off, his third place meant each way supporters were not disappointed, and unsurprisingly he is half those odds to record BAR Honda’s first Grand Prix win in Austria.

After five races few people would be surprised to see Michael Schumacher top of the standings, but that alone does not tell the whole story. Once again his odds of 5/4 suggest he will be the man to beat at the A1 Ring, but Mika Hakkinen was desperately unlucky last time and at 11/4, he is worth another chance to get his season back on track. Ralf Schumacher is also better than his performance in Spain might suggest and at double figure odds is excellent each way value.
