A Bookmaker's Preview Of The European Grand Prix A look ahead to the next race from a betting man's perspective.
The stage is set for a classic European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring circuit this weekend. Two years ago, Heinz Harald Frentzen put his Jordan at the head of the grid - the Jordan drivers can be backed at 40/1 to repeat the feat this time around.
After a highly encouraging start to the 2001 season, the Jordan team are still rated highly enough by the bookmakers to head the betting for the 'Wacky Races' market and Jarno Trulli, runner up here two years ago, is 7/2 to head the group of ten nominated drivers. If the Italian can regain his early season form he must have a great chance of landing the odds, and the 7/2 is bound to attract support.
You can bet on Jordan -- and other teams -- through Jordan's official e-betting partner, Eurobet. If you are a UK resident, go to www.eurobet.co.uk. If not, place your bets through Eurobet's international site, www.eurobet.com.
Following another Schumacher victory, albeit Ralf and not brother Michael, (much to the relief of the bookies), Ralf Schumacher will go to the Nurburgring with his confidence sky high - fans of the Williams driver will be keen to back him at 5/1 to record win number three of the year. However, the better bet may be the 10/3 available for him to record the fastest lap - what his car may currently lack in consistency is certainly made up for in speed. His teammate Juan Pablo Montoya is still looking for a first Grand Prix win and whilst odds of 10/1 about him gaining that breakthrough are not that tempting, the 6/5 on offer that the Colombian gains superiority in a head to head with Rubens Barrichello do carry greater appeal.
In front of what will effectively be a home crowd, Michael Schumacher will once more be the man to beat. Unsurprisingly, the elder Schumacher is once again hot favourite to gain pole, this time odds on at 4/6. Although Montreal showed he can be beaten, the fact remains he is hot favourite to gain pole, record the fastest lap and win the race. Anyone thinking he will accomplish all three feats should be backing him at the available 11/2.
A measure of Schumachers dominance is highlighted by the odds on offer for his closest challenger, David Coulthard. The Scot will be keen to maintain the pressure on Schumacher at the top of the leaderboard. The 9/2 chance for him gaining a second successive pole position at the Nurburgring appears to be a price worth taking. The odds on him achieving the clean sweep of pole, fastest lap and race victory are set much higher at 16/1.
Having won the race last year and seemingly even better when smarting from defeat, F1 punters could do worse than backing the reigning champion at even money to win the European Grand Prix, with a saving bet at 6/1 that his younger sibling follows him home.
