A Bookmaker's Preview Of The French GP
Magny Cours provided Jordan's Heinz-Harald Frentzen with one of his greatest moments when he took the chequered flag ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello two years ago.

The German is 66/1 to repeat the feat, with his teammate Jarno Trulli 50/1 to triumph at the track where he finished sixth last year. Frentzen finished one place behind the Italian on that occasion to just miss out on the points, but the 15/8 available about him scoring this time around is sure to attract support. For those punters keen to play at short prices, the 5/6 that Frentzen beats Nick Heidfeld in a head to head contest carries a certain appeal, although the stand out match bet must surely be Juan Pablo Montoya, fresh from his second place at the Nurburgring, at 11/10 to finish ahead of Mika Hakkinen.

You can bet on Jordan -- and other teams -- through Jordan's official e-betting partner, Eurobet. If you are a UK resident, go to www.eurobet.co.uk. If not, place your bets through Eurobet's international site, www.eurobet.com.

The F1 newcomer Montoya also recorded the fastest lap in Germany, confirming that the BMW Williams is the fastest car around at present. One option would be to back the Colombian driver at a tempting 40/1 to be 'King Of The Road', where he gains pole, records the quickest lap and wins the race. This may seem a tall order, but surely he will break his duck sometime soon?

McLaren's David Coulthard is still the nearest challenger to Michael Schumacher in the Driver's Championship and a repeat of last year's win at Magny Cours, at 5/1 this time around, would help to close the ever-widening gap. With his teammate, dual World Champion Mika Hakkinen, slipping further down the standings and the bookies' lists, a win this weekend is imperative if Coulthard is to win the sport's greatest prize. The Scot can be backed at 20/1 to complete the treble of pole, fastest lap and victory, and if things go in his favour that feat is well within his capabilities. Hakkinen is virtually friendless in the betting market, with several drivers now ahead of him; this situation looks unlikely to change in France and he carries little or no appeal as a betting option this weekend.

Michael Schumacher is yet again odds on favourite to win the race he last won in 1998, the consistency of the Ferrari and the undoubted brilliance of the German mean bookmakers will always be wary of him and punters should rarely look to oppose him. The odds on his younger brother winning at Magny Cours stand at 11/4. Keep an eye out for Rubens Barrichello; the Brazilian has finished third at Magny Cours for the last two years and at 16/1 is a fair each way bet to maintain that record.
