French GP Facts and Figures
Wins
Ferrari's Michael Schumacher has 49 career wins, two short of French four times world champion Alain Prost's all-time record of 51.
Schumacher's victory at the Nuerburgring last Sunday was Ferrari's 140th. McLaren have 132, Williams 105.
Schumacher has won four times at Magny-Cours, twice for Benetton (1995 and 1994) and twice for Ferrari (1998 and 1997).
Only two other drivers currently in Formula One have tasted success at the track - Germany's Heinz-Harald Frentzen for Jordan and last year's winner for McLaren David Coulthard.
Schumacher has finished first or second in 14 of the past 15 races and has five wins so far in 2001.
The last race without a Ferrari or McLaren driver on the podium was the September 1999 European Grand Prix at the Nuerburgring, won by the Stewart of Briton Johnny Herbert.
Since the French Grand Prix moved to Magny-Cours in 1991, Williams have had the most success with four wins. Benetton and Ferrari have won twice each, McLaren and Jordan once.
Pole Positions
Schumacher is the last driver to win at Magny-Cours from pole position, in 1997.
In 1996, the German set pole but did not start after his Ferrari's engine blew on the formation lap.
Schumacher and Briton Nigel Mansell, who still holds the official lap record, are the only drivers to have won from pole at the circuit. Mansell did it in 1992.
Schumacher's pole at the Nuerburgring was the 39th of his career, more than any other current driver but still well short of the late Brazilian Ayrton Senna's record 65.
The Ferrari driver has been on pole seven times in nine races so far this season. The record for poles in a single season belongs to Mansell, with 14 in 1992. With eight races remaining in 2001, Schumacher must secure pole in every race to beat that mark.
Ralf Schumacher has won twice this season but has yet to start a race from pole position.
Coulthard has 12 career poles, team mate Mika Hakkinen 26.
Ferrari and McLaren drivers have been on pole for the last 28 races. Frentzen, for Jordan in September 1999 at the Nuerburgring, was the last driver from another team to start on pole.
Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello, then with Stewart, started the 1999 French Grand Prix on pole.
Ferrari have 144 poles since their first ever race, McLaren 112 and Williams 108.
Points
Michael Schumacher has now scored 746 points in his Formula One career, the second highest tally ever although scoring systems have changed over the years.
He is 52.5 behind Prost's record of 798.5
Four drivers have still to score:
- Fernando Alonso (Spain) Minardi
- Enrique Bernoldi (Brazil) Arrows
- Luciano Burti (Brazil) Prost
- Tarso Marques (Brazil) Minardi
Six of the 11 teams have yet to win a race in their Formula One history - BAR, Arrows, Sauber, Jaguar, Prost and Minardi. Minardi are the only team never to reach the podium.
Starts
Arrows hold the record of 363 starts without a win.
Prost's French veteran Jean Alesi will be starting his 194th race, lifting him to sixth equal in the all-time lists alongside the late Italian Michele Alboreto.
