Friday Practice - San Marino Grand Prix 2001 Season A trouble-free, routine day for Benson & Hedges Jordan Honda, Jarno Trulli setting ninth fastest time, with Heinz-Harald Frentzen 13th. The Ferraris of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello were fastest on their home track at Imola.
'A good day; trouble-free,' said Trulli. 'We worked all day with the race in mind; fuel, tyres and so on. Everything was working well but we don't know how quick we are compared to the other teams because we don't know the fuel loads they were running. I'm happy with the balance of the car even if the track conditions changed. We had a wet-set up initially but when the track dried very quickly, I couldn't change the set-up as much as I wanted, which meant I was struggling a little bit. But we already know which
direction we have to take tomorrow.'
The first of the two 60-minute sessions was run on a wet track. By the start of the second session, the racing line had started to dry, the fastest time of the day being three-tenths of a second away from last year's pole position.
'The usual Friday practice, concentrating on the race set-up,' said Frentzen. 'I had no problems at all. It was unusual to run in the rain here so we learned something from that. But, otherwise, it was routine and I'm happy with progress so far.'
Neither Ferrari driver had any problems but David Coulthard, 11th fastest, left the road twice, the second excursion leaving the McLaren driver parked by the side of the track with 15 minutes of final practice remaining. Ralf Schumacher, third fastest, complained of nervous handling on his Williams, team-mate, Juan-Pablo Montoya, finishing the day at the bottom of the time sheet when an engine change during the second session meant the Colombian had no running on a dry track.
