Saturday Practice - San Marino Grand Prix 2001 Season Overnight rain and a wet track upset plans for Benson & Hedges Jordan Honda this morning during final preparations for qualifying this afternoon.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen set fifth fastest time in the final minutes but an attempt by Jarno Trulli to run on dry weather tyres at the end of practice did not pay off and he had to be satisfied with 16th fastest time.
'It wasn't the usual Saturday morning practice,' said Frentzen. 'Usually, we would have had more experience at this stage of running with low fuel but, thanks to the wet track yesterday morning, we didn't do that because we were concentrating on race set-up later in the day. So, because of that and the wet track this morning we haven't been able to do the fine-tuning for qualifying. On the other hand, I don't think that's going to present too many problems for us this afternoon. It looks like the track is going to be dry and, more or less, we know what to do with the set-up.'
The ambient temperature rose from 5 to 9 degrees C during the two 45-minute practice sessions. The racing line had begun to dry during the final 10 minutes but, even so, the track remained very wet in parts, particularly the challenging 180-mph downhill run to Acque Minerali corner. In common with the rest of the quick runners, Frentzen ran intermediate wet-weather Bridgestones.
'I tried grooved dry weather tyres during my last run, but, although the track was getting faster all the time, it was still too wet in places for the grooved slicks,' said Trulli. 'We worked mainly on the wet set-up this morning, and there were no problems with the car.'
The Ferraris of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello were fastest once again, with David Coulthard third for McLaren despite a brief off-course excursion. Ralf Schumacher was the fastest Michelin runner in seventh place, his Williams teammate, Juan Pablo Montoya, choosing not to run until the final 10 minutes, when he chose grooved slicks and suffered the same problems as Trulli. Montoya was 12th fastest.
