'Everything was perfectly routine,' said Trevor Foster, Managing Director, Jordan Grand Prix. 'Neither driver had any problems and we spent the session checking brakes. Imola, as we know, is very hard on brakes thanks to the number of chicanes but we seem to be okay. Jarno also tried the spare car, which is set up for him.
'The drivers also used the session to scrub in their front tyres. Normally, this would have been done on Saturday morning but, because it was wet, we didn't get the chance. It's essential to do that because you can't start a race, or leave from a pit stop, on fresh tyres, the fronts in particular. It takes several laps for them to 'come in' and reach optimum performance, so you need to get that job done during practice.
'Now we have the usual job of deciding tactics and choosing between one, two and maybe even three - stops. Past form at this circuit suggests a two-stop tactic is best. But, we'll see.'
David Coulthard was fastest, the McLaren driver saying he had no problems with both his race car and the spare. Mika Hakkinen understeered off the road but no damage was done to his McLaren. Neither Ferrari driver reported any problems. Ralf Schumacher, second fastest this morning, said he was concerned about the performance of his tyres if the ambient temperatures remained cool. The forecast is for a dry race, but perhaps under more overcast conditions. The 62-lap Grand Prix is scheduled to start at 2pm (local).
