Saturday Practice - Monaco Grand Prix 2001 Season As the tempo began to build in preparation for qualifying this afternoon, Benson and Hedges Jordan Honda drivers Jarno Trulli set sixth fastest time, Heinz-Harald Frentzen claiming tenth fastest after losing the final half hour with a mechanical problem.
Trulli had no problems but said it was too early and too difficult to make a prediction concerning qualifying and the chances of repeating his front row grid position from last year.
'Jarno is looking okay,' said Tim Holloway, Head of Engineering at Jordan Grand Prix. 'We'll have to wait and see what happens this afternoon but I think we're in good shape. Regarding Heinz, we don't know exactly why he stopped because we haven't got the car back yet but it's a hydraulic problem of some sort. We spent the morning working on qualifying set-ups and it's a shame because Heinz was in good shape until that happened.'
'Everything had been going well until I stopped,' confirmed Frentzen. 'It had been very satisfactory and I was ready to improve further when I put on a fresh set of tyres. Unfortunately, I never got a quick run with these tyres because the car stopped just as I was reaching the top of the hill on the approach to Casino. Obviously, qualifying is going to be tough it's difficult here anyway and the times are very close but I now have the additional problem of not having completed my preparations for qualifying. We'll see how it goes.'
Several drivers either spun or crashed, the worst incident happening to Luciano Burti when his brakes failed, forcing the Prost driver to crash (without injury) deep into the escape road at Ste Devote. The session was stopped for 14 minutes when Jos Verstappen's Arrows suffered an engine failure and drenched the final quarter of the lap in oil. Several drivers later came to a standstill on the track when Giancarlo Fisichella spun his Benetton at Rascasse. Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher were fastest overall for McLaren and Ferrari respectively.
