Saturday Qualifying - European Grand Prix 2001 Season
The Benson and Hedges Jordan Honda drivers felt they had done the best they could, Jarno Trulli and Heinz-Harald Frentzen finishing seventh and eighth, the 'best of the rest' behind the top three teams at the end of a typically competitive hour-long qualifying session.

'After this morning's practice,' said Trulli, 'I predicted we would be seventh and eighth behind the three top teams, so I am happy that my qualifying position is not worse than I had hoped. It was a difficult qualifying, though, with a lot of cars out at the same time putting dust on the track, so I had to abort my last two runs because of traffic. And on the last run there was also a yellow flag. I could have improved my lap time and been higher up the grid as there was more potential in the car, but I did the best I could given the situation on the track today. The car feels good, but I think it will be a tough race.'

'Eighth on the grid is a good result for me, coming back after missing the race in Canada and having the problems I had during practice yesterday,' said Frentzen. 'It's good to be back on the pace and back in racing, qualifying in the top eight. I was quite happy with the balance of the car today; of course, you always feel it could be better but I think that was enough for today and now we will concentrate on the race. I think we can do well here. More than anything, though, we want to finish and finish in the points.'

'Almost in every case,' said Eddie Jordan, 'each team had its drivers qualify close to each other and we were no different, taking seventh and eighth places on the grid. With the emergence of Williams, the fourth row is the best we can expect at the moment, but we've got to make sure we get some points tomorrow.'

The Schumacher brothers filled the front row of the grid, Michael taking pole despite losing time in the morning due to a hydraulics problem on his Ferrari. Ralf had no problems with his Williams, a trouble-free weekend so far for Juan Pablo Montoya allowing him to qualify his Williams in third place. Rubens Barrichello was fourth fastest despite a power steering problem with his Ferrari. The McLaren drivers, led by David Coulthard, were disappointed with fifth and sixth places thanks to trouble dealing with the kerbs at the last chicane.
