Saturday Practice - French Grand Prix 2001 Season A mixed morning for Benson and Hedges Jordan Honda as Jarno Trulli set fifth quickest time but various problems for Heinz-Harald Frentzen meant he could not improve on 11th fastest.
'I'm pretty happy about this morning,' said Trulli. 'Everything worked out very well; no problems with the car. We worked mainly on the qualifying set-up and I'm pleased with that because I have produced good lap times. I'm pretty confident for the afternoon. As usual, though, it will be difficult to get among the three top teams, but I will try hard. Overall, we have developed the car a lot during the last three races and it is doing a good job, particularly over the kerbs, which you need to attack here.'
Frentzen was delayed by technical problems in both of the 45-minute sessions as preparations were carried out for qualifying this afternoon.
'This morning didn't go terribly well.' said Frentzen. 'My track time was restricted, which was not good, particularly since I was not able to test here a few weeks ago. In the first session I had an electronics misfire on the engine and it took a while to fix that. Then in the second session, something came loose in the cockpit and it took some time to find out exactly what the problem was. The difficulty now is that I have not been able to find the best set-up for qualifying. I managed to squeeze in one final lap right at the very end but I spun coming out of the last corner! It's going to be difficult this afternoon.'
'No problems for Jarno but Heinz lost quite a bit of time,' said Tim Holloway, Head of Engineering. 'Jarno did a bit of race work at the start but then switched to work on the qualifying set-up. He's happy with the progress so far. However, Heinz-Harald was not helped by the disruptions.'
This morning's practice was run once again in dry, hot and sunny conditions, the ambient temperature climbing to 28 deg C. The Schumacher brothers, led by Michael's Ferrari, set the fastest times, Ralf's Williams being just a few hundredths of a second quicker than the McLarens of David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen. Trulli was best of the rest, the Jordan Honda faster than Rubens Barrichello's Ferrari and the Williams of Juan Pablo Montoya. There were no serious incidents and only a few spins and off-course excursions.
