Laurent-Perrier is one of the few remaining family owned Champagne Houses and was founded by Eugene Laurent in Tours-sur-Marne in 1812. While most of the early records were destroyed during the First World War, it appears that Eugene Laurent married Mathilde-Emile Perrier. In the tradition of Champagne widow, Mathilde Perrier took up the reins of the business when he died on April 15 1887. In 1938 another widow, Marie-Louise de Nonancourt, a sister of Victor and Henri Lanson, took over Laurent-Perrier. It was under her son, Bernard de Nonancourt’s stewardship that the company experienced phenominal growth.
From just 38,000 bottles in the cellars, Laurent-Perrier reached sales of one million bottles by 1966 and seven million by 1984 - it is currently the fourth largest producer. Laurent-Perrier Brut Non-Vintage is the flagship champagne and embodies the house style: deliciously fresh and easy to drink. ‘Wines for pleasure’ is how Bernard de Nonancourt describes it.
